The playful presentation of each dish at the 2nd Street District’s first sushi restaurant is just the beginning of what’s to come. Each dish is a uniquely flavorful experience of its own. Opened in December by the owners of North Austin’s Sushi
Sake, Yu Sushi offers a creative menu that delivers on every front—cold and hot appetizers, char grill, sashimi, and authentic Japanese ramen noodles served at lunch. The house special rolls are the real stars, like the Hot Chick, made with shrimp tempura, avocado, spicy tuna, and green onion, and sprinkled with delightfully crunchy flakes. Although the club-like atmosphere, with black walls and house music, feels better suited for dinner, the lunch menu has its highlights, with options for both udon and ramen noodles and specials like four pieces of a roll with five pieces of sushi and miso soup ($12–$15). When we visited, the restaurant did not yet have its liquor license, so we enjoyed complimentary hot sake, and our gracious waitress suggested we go around the corner to Royal Blue Grocery to pick up a
bottle of vino or cold sake.
